A 48-year-old man from the Blaenau Gwent area died last night after a car left the road on the A4048 between Blackwood and Tredegar near Argoed.
Another person was taken to hospital and later discharged.
A 24-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving.
Fire crews from Malpas, Cefn Fforest, Ebbw Vale and Merthyr Tydfil were called to the scene to help free casualties.
Police would like to hear from anyone who saw a red Hyundai coupe or red BMW in the Blackwood area or travelling north on the A4048 last night.
