WHAT a fantastic sight to see the thousands of fans gathered in London yesterday to celebrate the Beijing success of Britain's Olympians and Paralympians.

And of course we in Gwent can be rightly proud of our own athletes who did so well and who counted among those being feted by the crowds in the capital city.

Liz Johnson, was pictured gleaming with pride as she took part in the procession in recognition of the gold medal she won at thee Beijing games.

The 22-year-old's gold medal was a poignant victory coming just weeks after the untimely death of her 53-year-old mother Bonnie, from cancer.

Her achievement though was matched by so many of our Paralympians and Olympians who brought home a tremendous haul of medals.

And given the gloomy nature of the news which is currently dominating the headlines, yesterday's parade was like a ray of bright sunshine.

This was Britain's best Olympic performance since 1908 and of that we can all be proud.

Our own roll of honour would not be complete without mentioning Gareth Duke from Cwmbran who took a silver medal in the 100m breast stroke final.

And of course rower and former Monmouth School pupil Tom Lucy for his silver medal success in the eights competition.
