A MONMOUTHSHIRE woman has collected a petition of more than 200 signatures for horse and riding signs to be placed near the spot where her horse was killed.

Jackie Budd was seriously injured 14 years ago when a lorry hit the back of her horse as she was riding along the road from Shirenewton to Gaerllwyd.

Her horse Dominic was instantly killed and she spent several days in the Royal Gwent Hospital with fractures to her spine and ribs.

But her request for two horse and riding signs to be placed along the 200m stretch of road where the accident happened was refused by the council.

Mrs Budd, 47, said the road is a rat run and has now collected a petition of 206 signatures which she hopes will be more effective.

She said the amount of traffic on the road and the number of horses which use it has increased enormously.

She said there are now more than 60 horses stabled along the road which runs parallel to the B4235.

She said: “It’s an accident waiting to happen.

“It’s a long straight road so everybody uses it to put their foot down.”

But she said she cannot understand the arguments put forward by the council against her campaign.

Monmouthshire County Council's traffic and development manager, Mark Davies, said the road is in the countryside where horse riders are often seen.

Mr Davies said: “Monmouthshire is a rural county where horse riding is popular and commonplace. Inappropriate use could lead to a proliferation of horse signs on many roads which would devalue their use at more critical locations.”

Mrs Budd has now presented the petition, which includes the signature of Monmouthshire MP David Davies, to the highways department at Monmouthshire County Council.

Mrs Budd said she now hopes to meet with the council’s highways department.
