VOLUNTEERS who deliver meals to Newport residents had a new helper - the city's mayor.
Cllr Noel Trigg was able to see this vital service first hand when he joined members of the WRVS.
Around 100 people in the city receive meals on wheels and about 300 meals are delivered each week.
As well as providing food, the volunteers provide a friendly social contact and a regular check for those who may be confined to their homes.
Newport's meals on wheels came under threat in 2005 when the council threatened to axe the service.
But following vigorous protests, and an Argus campaign, councillors did a U-turn and it was saved.
Volunteers are at the heart of the service and a few hours a week is all it takes to make a real difference.
