PUPILS at a Newport school are being asked to illustrate the challenges facing youngsters living in the developing world and the winners will represent Wales at a European Parliament event.

Wales Euro-MP Glenys Kinnock visited Bettws High School to launch a Europe-wide competition aimed at engaging young people in efforts to tackle global poverty and injustice.

Mrs Kinnock talked to students about her experiences of poverty and injustice in Africa and Asia as well as EU efforts to alleviate suffering.

She then asked them to prepare a poster to illustrate the challenges faced by youngsters living in the developing world.

A winner and runner-up will be chosen to represent Wales at a special youth event being held in Brussels in December and the winning poster will be displayed at the European parliament.

Mrs Kinnock said youngsters were outraged when she told them that every day 30,000 children die before their fifth birthday when simple, affordable measures could have saved them or that 77 million children did not get the change to go to school.

“We want to harness that outrage and focus it so that young people can have their say in helping find solutions to the scourge of global inequality which blights so many children’s life chances."
