NEWPORT'S older residents managed to beat a "swim the channel" challenge.

Twenty swimmers aged 60 or over took part in the annual event at the South East Wales regional pool at the sports village in the city.

At the end of the two-hour session, between them they had completed 1,485 lengths or 23 miles - more than the English Channel distance of 21 miles.

All the participants were holders of the free swim card, a successful partnership between the Assembly and the city council. Deputy mayor Cllr Mark Whitcutt and his deputy mayoress, Deb Jones, presented all the swimmers with a "going for gold" silver certificate and a T-shirt.

Cllr Whitcutt said the city was proud of all those who took part and thanked the organisers, Barry Swift, swimming development officer and Kerry Griffiths, sports development manager.
