MORE than 100 fixed penalty notices were issued by police cracking down on nuisance parking around Abergavenny's Nevill Hall Hospital.

Parking at the site became free in April this year. Gwent NHS Healthcare Trust admitted that since then, the number of car park users has increased.

The issue was brought up at a Partnership and Communities Together meeting of the Grofield ward in September.

Police vowed to work with hospital staff to address the issue of cars spilling out of the car park and on to Brecon Road, causing access problems.

During the first two weeks of September, officers patrolled the area, discouraging motorists from parking on Brecon Road and leaving notes on windscreens.

It then began giving £30 fines to cars parked on the stretch. Over 100 have been handed out in the last month.

PC Andy Charles of Gwent Police said: "It has improved the situation on Brecon Road, but Nevill Hall has always been a busy car park."

Beverley Sansum, 39, of Market Street, Tredegar visited the hospital last month.

She was staggered by overcrowding.

She said: "There are five spaces outside accident and emergency that are reserved as drop-off points. But even these were filled with cars.

"A lady was trying to drop off a disabled child, but he had to walk around them.

I was livid, cars parked there should be clamped or given fines."

A Gwent NHS Healthcare Trust spokesman said: "We are looking at a number of options to control the levels of cars. These include issuing two or four hour permit tickets and we are also exploring the possibility of providing additional spaces."

The spokesman added that the trust will continue to work with Gwent Police in managing the situation on Brecon Road.
