A ROGERSTONE mum says she is fed up with walking her tot through rubbish left by youths.
Mother of three Lisa Patrick says she has regularly has take her two and a half year old son Jacob through bottles and cans on the way to Ty Du Nursery.
She got so fed up with the problem that six weeks ago she picked up and sorted rubbish from around St John’s Crescent in Rogerstone, Newport, where the nursery is based.
The issue hasn’t gone away and last week mums found rolling papers, aerosol cans and a girl's skirt left around the site, and that there was broken bottles lying around even on Wednesday.
“I don’t think its a good start for young children to walk through fifty cans of Fosters,” she said.
Ty-Du Nursery co-manager Debbie Lucas said there is new rubbish thrown around the St John’s Crescent area every week.
She said: “We’d like to see a little bit more of a police presence in the area.”
Crime and disorder reduction officer for Rogerstone Sophie Whiting said that the St John’s Crescent area was one of the main congregating points for drinkers in Rogerstone.
“We’ve been aware of the problem for a while,” she said.
“We are carrying out high visibility patrols. If the officers come across underage drinkers their alcohol is confiscated and a letter is sent to their parents.”
She added that if they are found drinking they are taken home.
Ty Du Nursery had previously been the victim of thousands of pounds worth of vandalism.
The Argus featured the nursery in the winter of 2006, when thousands of pounds worth of damage forced the nursery to cancel a Christmas concert.
