WE’RE not surprised that a survey today reveals that around half of motorists believe young drivers should be banned from getting behind the wheels of high-powered sports cars.
Those under 21 should be refused insurance cover on sporty and high-powered vehicles, a poll by a breakdown service found.
Allowing youngsters in these vehicles is a recipe for disaster.
In the wrong hands, cars have the power of a bomb.
Unfortunately though, this applies to any car not just high-powered ones, but the potential for younger drivers to show off is much greater in a vehicle that is more high-powered.
It was also interesting to see that in the survey of 1,000 people, some thought that limits should be imposed on the number of passengers young drivers would be allowed to carry.
Sadly in Gwent we have seen the loss of too many young lives when they have been carried in friends’ cars.
There will always be an element of distraction when two or three young passengers are in the same vehicle.
Some may think it a ridiculous step to impose a limit but if it saves just one young life then it will have been worth it.
Of course, it would be tremendously difficult to police but any suggestions on how we can prevent more young deaths on our roads should never be immediately dismissed.
There is a great deal of concern at the increasing death rate among young drivers under 21, as this survey shows.
Perhaps now it is time for the government and other relevant bodies to take a serious look at the issue and come up with some proposals that might help reduce this carnage on the roads.
