Sixty brave souls abseiled off the Nine Arches Viaduct in Trefil yesterday.

They were lowered 80 feet off the structure, with their efforts raising over £3,000 for the Hospice of the Valleys.

The Tredegar-based charity provides care at home for sufferers of cancer and other diseases. It operates throughout the south Wales valleys and costs £1 million a year to run.

Fundraiser Helen Morgan said: "Some of our nurses got involved and we raised more money than we expected."

Ages of those taking the plunge ranged from 11 to 60. Instructors from Tredegar's Bryn Bach Park helped lower the ropes.
