TWO Gwent businesses could face substantial fines for employing illegal workers.
Officers from the UK Border Agency visited Family Kebabs, Unit 5, Ebbw Vale Centre, Market Street, on Thursday and found two Turkish men, who were working behind the counter wearing "Family Kebabs" logo T-shirts, with no legal right to work in the UK.
The pair, aged 21 and 28, were taken to Ystrad Mynach police station before being transferred to immigration detention pending their removal from the UK over the coming weeks.
On Friday officers visited Newport Grill, 197 Upper Dock Street, where a 30-year-old Indian man, who was preparing food behind the counter, was arrested after a document check revealed he was in the UK illegally.
He was arrested and taken to Newport Central police station.
The UK Border Agency is now taking steps to remove him from the UK.
Both businesses were served with a Notice of Potential Liability and face a fine of up to £10,000 if the employers are unable to provide evidence that proper checks were carried out before employing illegal workers.
The visits to the two businesses were carried out after the UK Border Agency received intelligence about illegal working there.
Anyone who suspects that illegal workers are being employed at a business in Wales can contact the UK Border Agency on 029 2092 4727.
