Newport politicians are backing residents fighting to save a Newport club after plans to demolish and replace it with a block of flats were announced.

Newport East AM John Griffiths and MP Jessica Morden have spoken out after club owner William Jenkins revealed his plans to close the Ferns Club in Lliswerry Road to make way for new homes.

More than 300 people have signed a petition opposing the planning application and members have vowed to fight any plan to knock the club down.

Newport city council are currently reviewing the planning application and a decision is expected by the beginning of next week.

John Griffiths said: “Many people are angry and concerned at the planning application to take away this club, an important part of community life in Lliswerry.

"The club has about 300 members and is home to popular community groups, who would all lose out if this goes through.”

Jessica Morden praised those supporting the club. She said: “Newport would be a poorer place if we lose this club and that’s why I’m backing the residents.

"The council should guarantee that the Ferns can’t be demolished, by rejecting the application.”

The 300-member club has 30 weddings booked for next year and is home to a number of groups, including snooker teams, slimmers, theatre groups and bingo players.
