AN offer like the one at Escapade nightclub in Newport where you pay £5 and have as many drinks as you like on Wednesday nights was always going to be controversial.
Hundreds of students packed the club when it first ran the promotion last week.
The club’s manager is now assuring anyone concerned that he has strict checks in place such as only allowing someone to have another drink once they have brought back their empty glass.
He told us nobody misbehaved at the first event and they only shifted the same amount of drink that they would have on any normal night.
It may seem irresponsible to some.
But anyone going out with the intention of binge drinking will do it regardless of what offers are on.
The majority of drinkers know their capacity and would be unable to exceed it despite the offer of free booze.
Binge drinking does need to be addressed.
And if this promotion leads to problems the nightclub should be held responsible.
