NEWPORT council has moved to reassure residents there are no plans to turn off street lights in the city.
The council say a number of enquiries have been made after other Welsh councils including Torfaen decided to turn half the lights off to save energy costs.
Councillor David Atwell, cabinet member for Transport and Highways said any future plans to turn lights off would involve a full consultation between the council and residents.
Cllr Atwell said: “My view is that on the grounds of public and vehicular safety and the significant costs of changing our street lights back from their current sensor systems to timing mechanisms it is not an option at this time."
