The deadline for feedback on proposals to build a new prison in Wales was extended today.

The Ministry of Justice pushed back the closing date from tomorrow to November 28 after local councils called for more time.

A shortlist of sites, published in August, includes two in the south - in Cwmbran and Merthyr Tydfil - and two in the north - in Wrexham and Caernarfon.

Justice Minister David Hanson said: "I have today agreed to extend until November 28 the closing date for comments on the published shortlist of potential sites for a new prison in Wales.

"This follows requests for an extension from local authorities which have sites located in their authority areas.

"The publication of the shortlist has rightly stimulated discussion and constructive comments.

"The location of a new prison in Wales is an important decision and I consider it right to allow more time for comments to be provided.’’
