LOOKING for a scare on Halloween? Then you may be spoilt for choice.
Gwent is the home of many a pub claiming a ghost and reportedly haunted mountain, with the Skirrid Mountain Inn in Abergavenny being one of the most famous spots for ghost hunters.
Pub owner Geoff Fiddler said they were booked out over the Halloween weekend as people come to investigate where its believed around 180 people were executed during the time of 'hanging' Judge Jeffries.
The alehouse was previously used as a court, and the hangman’s noose is still in place.
Fanny Price, a woman though to died worked in the pub, has allegedly been seen by ghost hunters looking for a spook.
Her grave stone lies 150 yards away from the Skirrid, and she is believed to have died in the inn.
“Someone has seen her sit in a wicker chair upstairs,” he said. “When she looked again Ms Price disappeared in front of her eyes.”
Other allegedly haunted pubs include the Cross Keys Inn, in Usk.
Here legend has it a girl, who poisoned herself when her parents locked her in to keep her away from a lover, haunts the rooms.
Meanwhile the Rising Sun in Rogerstone has seen beer barrels moved overnight, and in 2005 the Friendly Fox in Rhiwderin contacted ghost hunters after hearing strange women’s voice and slamming doors.
Newport's Tredegar House is said to be one of the most haunted buildings in Britain.
The King's Room at the house is said to have been used by Evan Viscount Tredegar in the 1930s.
It is claimed he dabbled in black magic, assisted by an occultist friend, who was a frequent visitor to the house.
But some of the scariest places may lie outdoors.
Alvin Nicholas, who has written a book called Exploring Supernatural Wales, said the most frightening place in Gwent is Twmbarlwm mountain above Cwmbran.
He says a friend of his has recorded ghost music around the tump, which he described as sounding like bagpipes.
The Pool of Avarice on the hill is also a source of mystery at Twmbarlwm.
“Strange cries are heard to come from the waters on stormy nights,” he said.
