OPPOSITION councillors in Torfaen will put forward a motion tomorrow, which could see all appointments to cabinet positions in the council overturned.
The motion has been tabled by Torfaen People’s Coalition, and calls for all the decisions taken by the council at its AGM on May 22 this year to be rescinded.
This would mean a re-vote for all cabinet positions, including the appointment of Bob Wellington as leader of the council.
Labour retained control of Torfaen council by forming a coalition with three Plaid Cymru and two Independent councillors to secure the 23 out of 44 votes they required.
The five councillors were then appointed committee chairmanships which come with extra allowances, sparking a bitter political dispute.
Leader of Torfaen’s People’s Coalition, councillor Stuart Evans, said: “The people of Torfaen clearly voted for change last May and expressed their anger that Labour were able to retain control of Torfaen Council with the support of three Plaid Cymru and two Independent councillors.
“Collectively these councillors broke the constitution when they voted themselves into positions which all have “special responsibility allowances” and they must collectively account for their actions, because their decision does not have the transparency required for the allocation of public money.”
As part of the motion Torfaen People’s Coalition claim the council acted against the constitution when an audit committee chairman was appointed at the AGM without the matter being proposed on the agenda and before the audit committee was fully formed.
The leader of Torfaen County Borough Council, Bob Wellington, said: “The opposition are entitled to put forward any motion they would like to the council and we have no objections about this.
“I look forward to debating this topic at our full meeting and we will have to wait and see what the council decides on the matter.”
