POLICE hailed an appeal for information regarding the death of a 26-year-old Llangibby man a success after it brought eight potential witnesses forward.

On Friday the Argus published CCTV images of eight people police wanted to speak to in connection with Gareth Davies' death in Cwmbran one year ago.

Police say they have now traced each person shown in the images.

Mr Davies was involved in a scuffle outside the John Fielding Wetherspoon pub some time between 12.30 and 1.30am on October 28, 2007. He died from head injuries two days later.

Mr Davies who worked as a mortgage advisor for HSBC in Cwmbran was dressed as a ghostbuster on a fundraising night out with members of Pontnewydd United FC.

On Saturday night members of Pontnewydd Utd held a fancy dress disco and karaoke night in Mr Davies' memory. Club secretary Kevin Beckett, 52, said the club was now considering making the event an annual fixture.

Mr Beckett said he hoped the investigation could now move forward.

"I'm glad they've now managed to trace everyone," he said.

An inquest into Mr Davies' death in May ruled he was unlawfully killed.

Two men were previously arrested in connection with Mr Davies' death but were later released without charge.

Police are still appealing for taxi drivers who may have picked up anyone in Cwmbran town centre between 1 and 2am on the Sunday October 28 to come forward.

Anyone with information regarding the incident is urged to call Gwent Police on 01633 83811 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
