You know what happens after Bonfire Night when you realise that after spending all that money on a deluxe box of fireworks you could have had more illumination by taking a box of Swan Vestas and lighting them all at the same time.
That’s right, thoughts turn to Christmas!!
On Wednesday we’ll be hosting the Cardiff Christmas lights switch-on and I suppose that‘s the start of the festive season proper. Having said that there are some people walking amongst us who will, given the opportunity, tell you in great detail how they have done all of their Christmas shopping, have the cards ready to go and are generally several steps ahead on the Christmas activity chart. I know because I’ve had e-mails and texts from them during my radio shows.
They tell you their story with that air of superiority which is meant to impress but just fills you with the urge to take the bumper roll of wrapping paper that you’ve had your eye on and putting it somewhere that even Santa would take a while to find.
As many people will be tightening their belts this Christmas, let’s not worry about whether the fridge is bursting full of food or that there isn’t an avalanche of presents under the tree. I’m not sure that those are the most important things to worry about at Christmas time. Perhaps we should be taking time to be with the people who matter most to us and maybe even sparing a thought for those who aren’t as fortunate as some of us. Just a thought.
