The Spirit (12A) *** - Samuel L. Jackson, Eva Mendes, Scarlett Johansson and Gabriel Macht.

AFTER the roaring successes of Sin City and 300, The Spirit is the latest to get the big screen treatment from graphic novel king Frank Miller.

Although it may not reach the heights of the aforementioned pair, The Spirit is still an enjoyable but rather empty pleasure that’s big on style but lacking in content and cohesion.

When murdered cop Denny Colt (Gabriel Macht) is reborn as the masked crime fighting crusader The Spirit, he finds himself locked in a deadly battle with psycho crime lord The Octopus (Samuel L. Jackson) and his ally Silken Floss (Scarlett Johansson).

The background to their showdown revolves around a chest stolen by stunning jewel thief and Colt’s ex Sand Saref (Eva Mendes).

Writer/director Miller’s movie is based on Will Eisner's groundbreaking comic strip and is hampered by diverting from its source material with some limp dialogue and complete discrepancies in terms of re-creating the 1940s backdrop.

Some fans of the superb 300 may be bitterly disappointed but The Spirit still has plenty to recommend it.
