A NEW 50 room hotel is being planned for Newport.
Parc Golf Club in Church Lane, Coedkernew, has applied to Newport Council for planning permission to extend its existing building and turn it into a hotel.
The club’s owner Terry Hicks said the hotel would be built on to the existing function area at the club.
Mr Hicks said this would allow the function facilities, bar, restaurant, golf and accomodation to be all under one roof.
He said the accomodation would be used by golf societies who are also looking for accomodation in the Newport area.
He said the club hosts around 70 weddings a year as well as dinners and dinner dances, but have lost weddings and functions because of the lack of accomodation at the club.
The plan is for the hotel to compliment the existing facilities and enhance what they already have to offer.
He said with next year’s Ryder Cup and Newport now a city, he hopes tourism will increase and there be a need for the accomodation.
He was unable to provide possible costings for the hotel as he said this would be more realistic once and if planning permission is granted.
This application is just the latest in a string of hotel application to be submitted to Newport Council in the last year.
City planners have already granted permission for the Friars Walk hotel, the transformation of the former city cinema into a Travelodge; an extension to an existing hotel on Chepstow Road; an extension to the Milton Hotel in Llanwern and the Old Rectory in Langstone.
Plans have been submitted for a former Newport children’s home on Chepstow Road to be turned into an eight bedroom hotel.
Arshid Rahman, who owns the Gateway Hotel also on Chepstow road, submitted the application to Newport’s planning committee.
MONMOUTHSHIRE Council agreed last year for a 2.2 acre council-owned site on Portal Road in Monmouth to be used as a hotel.
A new 62 room hotel costing £2.3 million opened in March in Bridge Street, Newport.
A proposed 120 bedroom hotel to be built at the Wales One Business Park in Magor near junction 23A of the M4.
