ONE OF Torfaen's senior officers is to cross the border and take up Monmouthshire Council's top job.
Paul Matthews is to become chief executive of the local authority.
The current deputy chief executive and strategic director of communities of Torfaen Borough Council will start at the council in the next few months.
Mr Matthews, 41, of Cwmbran, has 20 years of service in local government and has worked in his Torfaen role since 2005.
His responsibilities at the valley’s council include leading the council’s housing, community safety, regeneration, external funding and equalities strategies.
In addition, Mr Matthews has worked as deputy director of education in Torfaen and says he still has a passion for education.
The appointment was made following the retirement of Colin Berg, who will leave his post this week.
Council leader Peter Fox said he was pleased to announce the appointment.
"Although Paul will need to work his notice with his current authority before taking up his post, he will be working with the council over the next few months to ensure a smooth transition," he added.
An acting chief executive, who will carry the position over before Mr Matthews can take his post, is yet to be agreed.
