The Vale of Glamorgan Council is urging ladies to try their hand at a spot of golf following a recent successful event.

The council's sports development team held the 'come and try' sessions for women and girls in partnership with Golf Development Wales and Cottrell Park Golf Club.

With the Ryder Cup on its way to South Wales in 2010, the three organisations are working closely together to promote the benefits of golf to groups who do not usually take up the sport.

At the 'come and try' day at Cottrell Park, 76 local women and girls took to the greens to try their hand at golf and get expert advice on how to improve their swing from professional golfer John Hastings.

Many of those who attended the event will now be teeing off more regularly by taking up the club's offer of further coaching in the sport.

John Hastings said: "There is a real commitment to attract more women into the club and the facilities at Cottrell Park lend themselves to enjoying a fantastic social and sporting experience."

Anyone interested in the golfing opportunities for women and girls in the Vale of Glamorgan should contact John Hastings on 07761 137265 or Paul Nanji on 01446 704614.
