A NEWPORT mum who fell ill during a holiday to the Canary Islands was finally woken from her coma.

But now her family say they face another hurdle - they claim that their benefits will be stopped from today.

Lisa Jarvis has been in hospital since suffering a fit on June 9, the second day of a week-long holiday in Fuerteventura.

Last week the 28-year-old was airlifted to a hospital on the neighbouring island of Gran Canaria, where on Sunday doctors finally roused her from her medically induced coma.

Mrs Jarvis' husband, Andrew, remains at her bedside at the hospital in Las Palmas.

Her mother, Jennifer Knock, of St Julians, Newport, said: "I spoke to her briefly on the telephone yesterday.

"She didn't sound like herself, though. She was mumbling and is still very disorientated.

"She hasn't eaten or got up from the bed yet."

Mrs Jarvis is still under close medical supervision at the hospital, where doctors are continuing to investigate the cause of her illness.

It is not yet known when Mrs Jarvis will return home. Doctors on the holiday island said she could be flown home by air ambulance, but medical assessors for her insurers disagree. The family say they have also just learnt that their income support and Mr Jarvis' carer's allowance for looking after his wife will be stopped today.

Mr Jarvis gave up work several months ago, when his wife first began suffering fits.

Mrs Knock said: "Because they have been out of the country for so long they cannot continue to claim. From now on their money will stop."

Meanwhile, Mr and Mrs Jarvis' three children, Jade, seven, Lauren, six, and five-year-old Caitlin are being looked after by their grandmother at her Newport home.

"They are all right, really, but are understandably anxious," said Mrs Knock.
