FOUR Gwent friends who were killed when their car left the road while they were on a fishing trip are being honoured with a fundraising football match.

Geraint Hill, 26, Scott Harding, 25, his brother Warren, 27, and Andrew Brooks, 30 all from Risca, died just over two weeks ago when their car left the B4239 between St Brides and Duffryn.

The overturned Toyota Corolla they were travelling in was recovered from a four foot deep reen.

Now bosses at Newport County AFC have decided to organise a tribute event with Risca United.

Three of the friends, Mr Hill and the Harding brothers, played for Risca United's youth team, and Risca's chairman Stuart Luckwell told the Argus he was touched by the approach, which came from Newport's general manager Wallace Brown.

He said: "It's a wonderful gesture. The community has been devastated by this awful tragedy.

"I returned from my holiday to the news, and I couldn't believe it."

The aim of the event, which will combine two matches, is to raise funds for the bereaved families.

"We are planning a veterans' match first of all, which will hopefully boast a few memorable names from past Newport teams, and that will be followed by a game between the two current teams," said Newport County AFC's general manager Mr Brown.

There are already a few veterans' names in the frame, including Grant Davies, Mark Kendal, Roger Gibbins, Mark Price, Michael Pengelly and Roger Addison.

Mr Brown added: "All the money raised will go to the families. When something terrible like this happens the whole community feels very deeply. We just wanted to do what we could to help."

The match will take place on August 7, at Risca United's ground.
