Craig Watson, recovering from a smashed right ankle which had to be reconstructed - including a bone graft - following a crash in the home Premier League defeat by Stoke in early May goes back to hospital on Monday for a progress report.

The ankle will be X-rayed, but it could be a further six weeks before the construction on his shattered ankle is removed and the 28-year-old Australian can get back on the road to recovery with intensive physiotherapy.

Watson said: "The surgeon (Kartik Hariharan) is making sure that the ankle is 100% and he is doing the best job possible.

"It's human nature, certainly in my case, to want to get on and get back on my bike as soon as I can. But for my future we have to make sure things are spot on."

The Wasps have a blank weekend because it is the Premier League pairs meeting in Glasgow tomorrow and they have no representatives.

However, the Mavericks are back in action after their eventful meeting with Conference League newcomers Scunthorpe last Sunday where a major brawl delayed the double header, the incident resulting in three riders being fined.

They travel to the Peak District of Derbyshire to face Buxton Hitmen tomorrow afternoon (tapes-up 3.0pm). Buxton Hitmen: Jonathan Bethell, Charlie Wright, Dean Felton, Carl Belfield, Lee Derbyshire, David Farley, Ross Parker.

Mavericks: Karlis Ezergailis, Scott Pegler (rider replacement), Jamie Westacott, Danny Warwick, Karl Mason, Billy Legg, Sam Hurst.

* Although there is no Wasps action at the Hayley Stadium over the weekend, Wasps skipper Tony Atkin will be in action, competing in the third round of the British short-track championships tomorrow night (7.pm), although gates open at 5pm for practice which the public can attend.

* Cwmbran's Tom Brown, now riding for Conference League Weymouth, finished third in the Wessex Rosebowl individual tournament on his home track. He scored ten points and the event was won by Trevor Harding (Boston).

Newport Maverick Sam Hurst also competed and finished level on nine points with David Mason. Hurst, who caught the eye with his performance, gained a heat win in his last ride which gave him success over Paul Candy, another ex-Maverick.

* The second edition of the BUG guide to biker-friendly stop-offs is now available, highlighting guesthouses, bed and breakfast, farms, camp sites, hotels and cafes who have turned their backs on biker prejudice."
