A GWENT sports club is to field the county's first ever women's cricket team.
Caerleon-based Isca Crows cricket club have organised an all-women side.
Chairman Mike Cole said: "It has been an ambition of the club for a long time to have as many different teams as possible.
"Our fixtures secretary Mary Martin sits on the committee of the Newport and District League and a women's team is something they've been keen to see as well, so it was a very happy marriage."
A number of the women players are the partners of male team members, including Mr Cole's wife Helen, who is chairwoman of the female side.
Mr Cole said: "A few of our partners were keen to play. I guess they were fed up of being cricket widows and thought they would like to give it a go.
"Cricket is a great sport for women as it doesn't rely on strength so much as quick thinking and good reaction."
Other players have joined through word of mouth and the team hope to field a full-strength side for their first match against Bridgend on July 24 at Spytty Park, Newport.
But first they are looking for sponsorship. To help call Mike Cole on 07763 980574.
