SOUTH WALES teenager Rebecca Llewellyn's Wimbledon debut lasted just 42 minutes as she was comprehensively beaten by fifth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova.

Llewellyn's SW19 bow ended in disaster as she took just a single game off Kuznetsova in a rapid 6-0, 6-1 first round defeat on Court 18.

"I gave it my best shot but it just wasn't good enough," said Llewellyn, who qualified for the tournament after reaching the final of the LTA wildcard tournament. "This has whetted my attitude to get back next year and have another go.

"I'm hoping next year for a kinder draw and hopefully I can hang around in the tournament for a bit longer that this time.

"I've played one of the best players in the world and it doesn't get much harder."

The Russian may have crashed out of Wimbledon in the first round last year against France's Virginie Razzano but there was to be no repeat.

Llewellyn may have experienced a dramatic nine months, rising more than 250 places in the world rankings from 700 to 434, but beating a player of Kuznetsova's class always seemed a tall order for the Welsh number one.

Kuznetsova powered to victory to win the first set without the loss of a game and took the first three games of the second set before Llewellyn claimed her only game.

The Russian was unfazed by the minor hiccup and won the next three games with ease to close out the match.

The highlight of Llewellyn's Wimbledon appearance saw her hold four break points in the third game. But for the most part the British star found herself beaten for pace and position.

Meanwhile, British number two Greg Rusedski eased into the second round at Wimbledon thanks to a routine 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 win over Spain's Alberto Martin to set up a meeting with 11th seed Joachim Johansson, who later beat Spain's Albert Montanes.

"It was good to get out there," said Rusedski. "I was quite pleased to play four sets. I'm happy with the way I served and the way I played, especially in the third and fourth sets."

Roger Federer launched the defence of his Wimbledon title with a straight-sets win over Frenchman Paul Henri-Mathieu on Centre Court.

The 23-year-old Federer cruised to a 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 victory against an opponent competing in his third Wimbledon.

Top seed and former champion Lindsay Davenport made light work of her first round opponent at Wimbledon in a 6-0 6-2 win over Russia's Alina Jidkova on centre court.
