MORE than 5,000 people enjoyed a Gwent carnival over the weekend with surfing and rock climbing two of the more unusual activities on offer.

Organisers hailed Cwmbran Carnival as "the best ever line-up".

Budding surf dudes and dudettes had a go at a free surf simulator. It proved popular.

A special 24ft wall attracted many keen climbers and beginners who had a go at four different rock faces, also for free.

Drama groups from around Gwent performed as well as belly dancers, sea cadets, and marching bands.

A fun fair and a children's corner with inflatables helped the youngsters cool down.

As well as the high adrenaline activities, visitors also enjoyed the many arts and crafts stalls and had their fill with tasty Middle Eastern cuisine.

The parade, which started at the Arvin Meritor car park near the town centre, was well applauded by spectators who lined the streets and soaked up the sun.

The fun of the carnival carried on until 6pm with the Alison Instone academy of dance claiming joint first position with Cwmbran council for the young people's circus group.

Joint runners-up were Mabinogion Torfaen Youth Service and Amanda Ellis's Allstar dancers.

There was a special guest appearence from Webster the Cat in the storytelling tent.

Verity Hiscocks, carnival organiser said: "Despite it being very hot on Saturday, everyone had a great time.We want to thank everyone involved and everyone for coming along.

"Thanks to Co-Star, the Thornhill community organisation, for the cuisine and dancers who gave us African drumming and Indian dance displays. It was nice to see something cultural.

"It was a tremendous carnival with something for everyone."
