THE PARTNER of one of the four men men killed in the tragic accident last night told how she begged him not to go because of a "bad feeling" about the fishing trip.
Jodie Sefton, who has two young children with 30-year-old Andrew Brooks, said she had the feeling before he left the house and pleaded with him to stay in.
The 22-year-old mother of 18-month-old Taylor and three-month-old Macy said the biggest heartbreak for her now is that her children will grow up without knowing their "wonderful" father.
Fighting back tears, Lliswerry-born Ms Sefton said: "We went to a family barbecue in Ynysddu on Saturday and the only reason we came home early was because it was raining. He was in the house for literally ten minutes when his mates rang and asked him to go fishing. I didn't want him to go for some reason, but he insisted.
"It was weird because every time he said he was going fishing in the past I would let him go but I was literally begging him not to go for some reason - it was almost like a premonition. Had it not been raining at the barbecue he would still be here today. His last words to me were, 'I won't be long babe.'"
The couple first met five years ago after being introduced by mutual friends. They have been together ever since and shared a flat in Risca. Ms Sefton said: "We were looking to take a holiday together as a family for the first time in about two months time. We also wanted to get a house together so my little boy could have a garden to play in. We just had so many plans and now it's all gone.
"Andrew was a lovely man and you couldn't ask for a nicer father to his children or a nicer son to his parents, Byron and Marion. He was their only child.
"Everyone thought the world of him. He is the father of two beautiful kids and they are never going to know their dad and that's what hurts the most."
Ms Sefton said the only consolation is that Mr Brooks, who worked as a night porter at the Tufnells factory in Rogerstone, was probably having a laugh with his good mates before he died.
She also recounted the moment she realised something had gone terribly wrong during the fishing trip.
She said: "The girlfriend of one of the boys rang me at 4am on Sunday and asked me if they had seen him. Her phone ran out during the conversation but at 8am I rang her back and she said the police were round at her house.
"It was another two hours before it was confirmed the bodies were inside the car. I couldn't believe it. You just don't expect these things to happen. He was such a nice person. Why did it have to happen to him?"
Ms Sefton has now moved out of the flat she shared with Mr Brooks because the memories of him are too painful to bear.
"I can't go back," said Ms Sefton. "That was our home so I have put in my notice to leave the flat. I will go back to Risca at some point but at the moment I am living with my sister in Lliswerry."
