AROUND 150 people clad in pink took part in a charity walk around Newport yesterday.

The flamboyant dress sense was all in aid of the annual Newport Fizz half-marathon walk.

Although the number of entrants was down slightly on last year, the event's main organiser, Sarah MacCallum, hopes the event will raise around £15,000 towards a 'well-being house' in Newport for anyone affected by cancer.

She said: "We had our banners stolen, which curbed our publicity campaign, but lots of the people here are doing it for a second and third time, so it's fantastic. The day still turned out to be a big success." The 13.1-mile route across Newport took in Tredegar Park and Fourteen Locks.

Val Lewis, of Union Road, Abergavenny, was taking part, along with her sister, Sandra Hubbard, from Pembroke Dock.

Mrs Lewis entered the Guin-ness Book of Records in 2002 along with her four sisters for being the first family with five siblings to successfully complete the London Marathon.

She said: "We think it's a good cause and it has raised a lot of money for cancer awareness."

Alway councillor Ray Truman was among those taking part. He said: "This is my third year and I think it is a fantastic cause and I'm pleased to be a part of it.

"It's a good advert for the charity and it is good for Newport to be hosting it."
