Newport Wasps skipper Tony Atkin, pictured, will be looking to continue with his double-figure form in tonight's Premier League home meeting with Glas-gow (tapes-up 7.0pm) - the start of speedway's biggest weekend in south Wales.

All eyes then switch to Cardiff where the British Grand Prix is being staged at the Millennium Stadium tomorrow and then it's back to the Hayley Stadium for the Welsh Open on Sunday (tapes-up 1.0pm).

Atkin, who had a forgettable season last summer after suffering a broken arm, is certainly firing on all cylinders and last time out top scored for the Wasps in their 54-36 defeat at Reading in the Knock-out Cup. He was the only double figure contributor with a paid 12, but it should be appreciated that it was from seven rides.

Atkin's league average is 6.95 and he is Wasps' top points scorer with 63 - two ahead of Neil Collins but has taken 42 rides, more than any of his teammates.

But on the other side of the coin there is no end to the misery being suffered by Kristian Lund who failed to score at Reading and his last 22 rides in five matches have brought a paid eight (5+3).

Wasps need a win to ease back into a mid-table slot - bearing in mind that they face three meetings on the road next week in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Berwick.

Tim Stone, Newport promoter, said: "Our meetings against Glasgow tend to be memorable to say the least."

l Newport have sold Australian asset Ashley Jones to King's Lynn where he has been on loan, covering for injured fellow countryman Troy Batchelor who suffered a broken arm earlier in the season.

And Wasps' boss Tim Stone gained praise from King's Lynn boss Keith 'Buster' Chapman over the deal.

He said: "Tim was very reluctant to let Ashley go but he could see it was best for the boy's future. Ashley and I really appreciate that.

"Ashley is exactly the kind of rider that I want here in building for the future. He is a real battler."

Jones has an average of 5.33 but at Newcastle last Sunday he stepped up from the reserve berth into the number two slot.

Stone said: Neil Street (team manager) and I arranged for Ashley to come over for this season to be in the Wasps. That was the grand plan but there is always a concern when a rider is loaned out to get him back into racing mode, while you wait for the time for team changes, they will settle in at the loan club.

"Although Neil and I are unhappy that we have not got Ashley as we had planned it is not ethical to put pressure on a rider to be somewhere when they prefer to be elsewhere, but it's all been sorted out amicably."
