JOE Calzaghe's proposed super middleweight unification clash with Jeff Lacy in November was already shaping up to be a cracker.
But now Lacy's promoter Gary Shaw has cranked up the heat to boiling point with the announcement that he wants to put his man Diego Corrales up against red-hot Ricky Hatton, pictured, on the same bill.
Shaw wants the amazing double bill to take place at the Millennium Stadium in front of 60,000 fans and, if pulled off, would be one of the biggest nights in British boxing history.
Corrales is the WBO and WBC lightweight champion after sensationally climbing off the canvas to knock out Jose Luis Castillo last month in a battle that many pundits described as one of the greatest fights of all time.
He is now willing to step up a weight to face Hatton, who dramatically pounded Kostya Tszyu into submission last Sunday morning to become the most wanted man in the light welterweight division.
"Diego would love to come to Britain and make a super-fight with Hatton," promoter Shaw declared.
"I have been talking with Showtime (American pay-per-view network) about making the fight on the same card as Calzaghe-Lacy in one of your biggest arenas.
"It is something that could really happen and it is the biggest fight out their at the moment. Diego never takes a backward step and neither does Ricky - it would be an incredible fight."
Corrales was at ringside for Hatton's crowning glory and was blown away by the atmosphere at the 22,000 packed out MEN Arena, which was being touted as a possible venue for Calzaghe-Lacy.
Shaw said: "Diego loved the crowd and said he would thrive on that kind of atmosphere if he gets the fight with Ricky.
"Diego knows Ricky is the number one light-welterweight in the world because he beat Kostya Tszyu. He is the man Diego wants and he is willing to come to Britain to get him."
The Calzaghe-Lacy clash is dependent on the American coming through his mandatory IBF title defence against Brit Robin Reid in Florida in August, but Gwent star Calzaghe has already said that he fully expects Reid to be disposed of.
