NEWPORT County have got themselves a star in the making in former Cirencester youngster Matthew Green, says former Somerton Park hero Steve Lowndes.
He should know, for Lowndes is the boss at the Cirencester Academy where Green was groomed. "I am sure he will do very well at Newport with John Cornforth," Lowndes said. "He scored 22 goals in all competitions last season, did really well for us.
"He was capped for England Schools at under-18 level and has a great future ahead of him.
"There were quite a few clubs in for him but all things considered, and living in Bristol, he felt that Newport was the best option."
Lowndes is a close friend of County boss John Cornforth and tipped him off about Green last season. When the youngster shone in a youth match between Newport and Cirencester, Cornforth's mind was made up for him.
"The lad is quick and strong with an eye for goal but it is his pace that is his main attribute," Lowndes said. "I recommended him last season and he played very well against Newport which persuaded John to take him."
Former Wales physio Lowndes played for County in two spells, the first during the halcyon days in the Football League between 1977 and 1983 before he went to Millwall, returning on a part-time basis from 1992-96 after the club had been re-formed.
He is tipping Cornforth to put last season's struggles behind him and take County to a far better campaign next time out.
"It was difficult for John last season as he came in after the start of the season and there were a few difficulties behind the scenes for him. "I know John well from his time with the national team and know how determined a character he is.
"He can start the new season from scratch and I am sure he will do a good job at Newport in the coming season."
He added: "I still live in Magor and get to three or four Newport games a season. I still take an interest in how they are doing and I will be back in the coming year to see how they and Matt are getting on."
County are still active in the transfer market and are in talks with several players, including winger Chris Taylor.
He is set to return for pre-season at Reading but County are hopeful of securing a one-year loan deal.
l County have announced they are to take part in a pre-season tour of the West Country.
They will play Exmouth on July 26, Elmore on July 28 and Bodmin on July 30.
Bigger name opposition is expected to be announced soon with either of the Bristol clubs high on the list of possibilities.
