URGENT repairs are being carried out to a Newport nursery school, hit by suspected arson, so that toddlers can return next week .

The blaze in the nursery of Malpas Court junior and infants school caused several thousand pounds worth of damage.

Acting head teacher Debra Guy said it was thanks to the prompt action of the South Wales Fire Service that the blaze did not spread to the adjacent junior school.

As the nursery was gutted, Mrs Guy had no choice but to ask parents to keep their children at home for a week.

A team of builders and decorators is now working to ensure the nursery will reopen next Monday.

Mrs Guy said: "We have to repair the structural damage, redecorate and replace the carpets and electrical fittings.

"We also have to get new equipment such as books, televisions and computers destroyed in the fire.

"Luckily this cost will be met by our insurers. It could have been far worse. It could have been the whole school.

"The fire service was here quickly and within an hour they had the fire out. Had they not arrived when they did it would have spread and I dread to think what would have happened."

Outdoor equipment used by children in Year 1 and reception classes was also destroyed as it was housed in the nursery building.

Mrs Guy said: "We will have a better idea on Thursday whether the nursery will be ready on time. Over the weekend the nursery teacher and myself will be on hand to help put in table and chairs which have been salvaged.

"Everyone is working hard to make sure the children don't miss anymore of their education and will be back in school next Monday."

It is believed the fire was started after lighted material was deliberately dropped through a window at around 6.15pm on Saturday, May 28.

Gwent police are continuing to investigate and are urging anyone with information to contact DCI John Evans at Bettws police on 01633 838111.
