A GWENT woman who celebrated her 106th birthday in April died after a short illness.
Great-great-great-grandmother Gertrude Jenkins, who lived at the Red Rose Nursing Home, in Ebbw Vale, passed away on May 25.
Her granddaughter, Susan Hayward, told the Argus that Mrs Jenkins had been ill for around three weeks before her death.
"She was able to enjoy her birthday on April 12, when she had a visit from the mayor and received her telegram and cards," she said.
"She lived on her own until she was 98 - she was extremely independent."
Mrs Jenkins, who was widowed more than 20 years ago, was born in Abertillery.
She and husband Alban had five children, Inez, Joyce, Megan, Roy and Wendy, then eight grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren.
Last year Mrs Jenkins' first great-great-great grandchild was born. Her funeral is to be held at Blaenau Gwent Chapel in Abertillery at 3pm on Thursday, June 2, followed by cremation at Gwent Crematorium, in Croesyceiliog, at 4pm.
