NEWPORT'S new mayor put on his robes and chains for the first time on Tuesday after being officially elected as the city's figurehead.

Councillor Ken Critchley, previously the cabinet member for development and employment, was voted city Mayor by his council colleagues. He replaces Councillor Paul Cockeram, who moves to become the cabinet member for Adult and Housing Services.

In his first act as Mayor, Councillor Critchley announced he had chosen the Samaritans as his Mayoral charity.

The charity provides 24-hour confidential emotional support for those experiencing distress.

Now, all cash raised at events during the Mayoral year will be put towards a much-needed new telephone system for the charity's New-port operation.

A former St Julian's High School pupil, Coun-cillor Critchley will be supported during his Mayoral term by his wife Sue, Deputy Mayor Roger Jeavons and Deputy Mayoress Sandra Jeavons.

At the council's annual general meeting the chairmen for each council cabinet and scrutiny portfolio were also nominated.

It was decided that Councillor John Richards will chair the scrutiny forum for Adult and Housing Services with Councillor Paul Cockeram as cabinet member for the service.

Alway member, Councillor Ray Trueman will continue as cabinet member for Community Safety with Councillor Tony Gray as scrutiny chairman. Councillor Ron Jones moved to be cabinet member for Culture and Recreation with Counc-illor Herbert Thomas as scrutiny forum chairman.

The Development and Employment post left vacant by Councillor Critchley will be taken by Councillor Erryl Heath and Councillor Ken Powell will chair the scrutiny forum.

Bob Poole remains cabinet member for Young Peoples' Services.
