FORGET Celebrity Love Island - the real thing has happened for an Usk naval officer who's just wed a local girl in the Falklands.
Regulating officer Steve Lapham married police officer Suzi Clarke in the most southerly cathedral in the world, Christ Church on Stanley.
Steve's parents Avril and David travelled thousands of miles from their home in Usk to see their 33-year-old youngest son tie the knot with 29-year-old Suzi.
"It was a wonderful experience," said Avril, "as it was winter in the Falkland Islands. It was cold and the five flower girls wore locally hand-knitted and dyed ponchos over their dresses."
Steve first met his wife-to-be four years ago on his second of three tours of duty with the Royal Navy. Suzi is from a large family and many of her nieces and nephews were bridesmaids and pageboys.
The couple exchanged specially-made rings of Welsh gold. They will make their home in Gibraltar as Steve takes up a new posting.
"It will be quite a wrench for Suzi," said Avril, "she's always lived in the Falklands and leaves a huge family there and many friends."
