ONE of the world's leading makers of garden tools will again be entrusting its exhibit at Chelsea to its Tredegar-based UK team.

Wolf-Garten produces everything from grass trimmers to greenhouse window-washers in its distinctive red and yellow livery.

Heading the Gwent contingent will be marketing manager Sian Lewis and her assistant, Laura Som.

Among many other products, the company will be plugging its neat ACCU battery shears and interchangeable attachments.

It's an implement designed to be user-friendly, and appeals very much to the over-50s gardener.

"This year we are doing 12 shows but Chelsea is our creme de la creme," said Sian. "We treat Chelsea a little differently because of the clientele and the expectations of the RHS, though all the shows we visit are important to us.

"The standard there is very high. Only a certain calibre of exhibitor is allowed, and if you don't maintain the standard year after year, they will approach you about it and consider your position.

"The best way to learn about your products is to talk to the people who are using them." Sian admits that exhibitors of live products have a tougher time in having to grow their wares and to keep them fresh and looking spectacular.

"For us there is a lot of planning to make sure that we have the best stand against our competitors. It's also not an easy show to do because it's long - longer than ever this year."

Five or six staff usually travel up, including Sian and Laura, who'll be there for a day. This year, professionals familiar with the company's products have been looking after things, notably exuberant former employee Richard Heptinstall-Bolton.

Sian said. "It's a long week. We will be selling to individual visitors to the stand, but it is also important for us to get feedback from them on our products.

"Chelsea is constantly busy," said Sian. "For us it's an early rise, an early breakfast then all hands to the deck. People will be queuing up."
