For some people, camping would not be their idea of a relaxing break.

But visit any campsite on any weekend in summer and you will find plenty of people willing to extol the virtues of holidays under canvas.

One of them, is escape... editor and deputy editor of the South Wales Argus, Nicole Garnon.

Nicole, with partner Andy and their two sons, Josef, nine, and Sam, six, spend much of the winter looking forward to the camping season and in summer try to fit in as many weekends away as possible.

"Camping is great, especially for families," says Nicole.

"Compared to any other weekend away it is really cheap and there is something fantastic about spending the whole weekend outdoors.

"The children absolutely love it, they go off exploring, always make friends and they have a free rein to get totally scruffy!"

David Sweet, who has a website dedicated to helping novice campers, says investing in camping is an investment in the family's future.

"It doesn't matter where you go, it is all about doing it together as a family." he says. www.camping.about.com

Nicole found out that getting camping equipment doesn't have to break the bank. "My advice is to shop around,"she says. "When we decided to try camping we bought a second-hand tent. It was the best £50 we ever spent.

"Living in Gwent we have some great sites right on the doorstep which are perfect for weekend stays."

Tips for getting started

l Go to see lots of tents, (in the rain, if you can!) think of how you'll use it -do you need to stand up in it? do you need a 'living' space, sewn-in groundsheets, and/or storm flaps? l Go on the internet to see what tents are available and at what price. l borrow a tent for a weekend to try camping - and ask other campers for tips l Sleeping bags need some thought - remember the British weather is unpredictable. Borrow one first if you can, and don't be tempted to scrimp. l Don't travel too far for your first trip to allow time to set up in daylight.

Essential equipment

Stove, cooking and eating utensils - and disposable barbecues are also useful; lantern and torch - a must for those late night trips to the loo; first aid kit - include insect bite ointment or bug repellent; hammer; cool box - although most campsite have fridges and freezers for your' use.
