Newport Wasps made a stunning finish to their home Premier Trophy meeting with King's Lynn yesterday - but sadly, their revival came too late.
Wasps lost only one of the last five heats while winning one of the first ten. Defeat was rather simple to explain.
Wasps were edged out by a point, but at no stage during the 15 heats did they hold the advantage. Team boss Neil Street said: "It was pleasing to see them come good at the end, but losing at home doesn't go down well."
Wasps' guest Stuart Robson, riding for the injured Craig Watson, fitted the bill perfectly with a paid 16 points - including a tactical ride in heat 11 worth double points - from five rides, and at that point he was the home side's only heat winner.
Wasps trailed by ten points when Robson took his double-points ride and he made sure it was not to be wasted, and in the penultimate heat Neil Collins came from third place to win the heat and then skipper Tony Atkin came through to leave Ashley Jones trailing.
Mads Korneliussen ended on a high with two heat wins after finishing third in his previous three rides, although he did collect a bonus point in all of them, finishing behind the wonderfully consistent and clever Collins, who scored nine points from four rides. It is such a pleasure to watch a craftsman at work.
Robson outshone his Rye House teammate Chris Neath, the former Newport rider who was guesting for King's Lynn, also at number five, riding in place of the injured Oliver Allen.
Newport asset Jones, on loan to King's Lynn for the injured Troy Batchelor, stung the club who own him with a paid 11 points from seven rides, and his reserve partner, Jan Jaros, scored a paid five from four rides - rapidly outscoring Newport's pairing of Atkin and Karlis Ezergailis.
Tomas Topinka, the King's Lynn captain and number one, set the tone of the meeting when he blasted his way to success in the opening heat, clocking 59.06secs., a time never bettered, although the sparkling Robson was close in winning heat four, Newport's first success of the meeting, in 59.53.
Newport suffered three maximum heat defeats and they only turned the tables in the final race of the sun-drenched event when Korneliussen and Robson paired up to flatten Topinka - the only time he failed to gain a top-two finish - and Paul Lee, who also finished the meeting with double figures.
James Brundle suffered a shoulder injury when he fell in heat three, his first race, and was excluded, causing Korneliussen to fall.
Wasps: Michael Coles 3 (4), Kristian Lund 4+1 (4), Mads Korneliussen 9+3 (5), Neil Collins 9 (4), Stuart Robson 15+1 (5), Tony Atkin 5+1 (5), Karlis Ezergailis 1+1 (3).
Stars: Tomas Topinka 12 (5), Adam Allott 3 (4), Paul Lee 10+1 (5), James Brundle 0 (1), Chris Neath 9 (4), Ashley Jones 9+2 (7), Jan Jaros 4+1 (4).
