DAVID Moffett has really done it this time, he's stirred up a right hornet's nest when there was no need to do anything of the sort.
There is no doubt he's made a success of his job as Welsh Rugby Union group chief executive when it comes to turning the finances around, of restructuring and making some order of the chaos which existed when he took over.
Of course, he's been helped enormously by the success of Wales in winning the Grand Slam for the first time for 27 years, and he admits it's the clubs who went to him to try to sort out the mess regarding the number and formation of teams at the highest level.
But it's not the best idea in the world to now step in and stir up all the passions again when it comes to the names of those teams.
Sure, it's causing problems in this part of the world and maybe it always will, but just when there were signs of the Gwent region settling down Moffatt makes inflammatory comments like the name will never be Newport Dragons, that they will never be granted stand-alone status and even that Newport would never have been a super club if Welsh rugby had gone down that road.
Was there really any need for all that to be said? What help was that going to be to a region which has had its difficulties bedding in, and is now losing such a key figure as benefactor Tony Brown? Why doesn't Moffett have a similar go at Cardiff Blues, who appear to be doing nothing at all to promote their regional identity? What he's done is wind people up all over again, provoke a heated response from Dragons officials and players, and work fans up all over again, polarising views once more. Let me straightaway urge a massive note of caution to all those 'warring' factions among different groups of fans here.
If all they want is to cause trouble, if they wish to stir it up all the time, then if they're not careful Rodney Parade will be no more, it will become a building site.
Newport is in the title of the main team playing out of the ground and so is Gwent, so that should be enough. For goodness sake, let's get on with it and support those who from next season will be doing their best to put Newport Gwent Dragons at the top of the Welsh rugby tree.
Regional rugby is here to stay, it can't be called Newport any more than it can be Cardiff or Swansea or Llanelli or Neath - there are clubs still playing in the Premier Division - and the base has to be Rodney Parade for all sorts of commercial and logistical reasons.
The main teams can't be called simply Dragons, Blues, Ospreys and Scarlets either, because there would be no identity at all then, no-one outside Wales would know who on earth they are.
But those Newport troublemakers who fight against the name of the regional team, the colours they play in and try to post insults and abuse on websites (thankfully now prevented from doing so) should just stay away, go and play with the traffic or find something more useful to do with their lives.
It will be a fully Gwent region next season, run by Gwent people, and to those who point out that Turner's club, Harlequins, have just been relegated, they ought to know that mere coaches there have little or no input when there is one man in place who is chief executive and head coach controlling just about everything.
There is a great deal going on behind the scenes with the Dragons which will become apparent in due course. Attention is being paid to onfield weaknesses, while off the pitch, for example, there was a major national tournament only last weekend based at Abergavenny and Raglan, with the Dragons playing a leading role in its organisation and leading players presenting prizes.
That has to be the way ahead. And if you want to watch the best the area has to offer with the cream of European teams on offer, then there is only one way of doing that - support Newport Gwent Dragons.
