NEWPORT'S famous pandas were saved from extinction when a garden centre stepped in.
Now they are set to return to their summer home, on the Malpas M4 roundabout, in time for this year's Newport in Bloom competition.
Concern was mounting among the Newport in Bloom committee that the pandas, one of the city's most popular floral displays, could be under threat because of a funding shortfall.
But an appeal to local businesses for sponsorship led to Sunnydale Garden Centre in Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran, coming to the rescue.
Newport in Bloom committee is still seeking businesses to help sponsor the stunning floral displays which brighten up the city over the summer months. Companies such as Panasonic and HSBC have already offered to sponsor roundabout displays in the city but there are still plenty of opportunities for businesses to play their part and help keep Newport blooming.
David Morris, Newport council's grounds and countryside manager, said: "We are delighted that Sunnydale Garden Centre has stepped in to ensure the pandas are returning to the Malpas roundabout this summer.
"Over the past few years they have become a landmark display, not just for people in Newport but across the country."
Any business interested in sponsoring a roundabout or floral display should contact David Morris on 01633 232812.
