HUNDREDS are expected at the funeral of tragic Newport schoolboy rugby player Lewis Fullwood next week.

The 13-year-old, who was a pupil at St Joseph's High School, died last Friday after an accident at his home earlier in the week.

A popular and talented rugby player, Lewis was also a black-belt in Karate and played roller hockey for Wales.

His death has sent shockwaves through his close-knit school and rugby communities.

Counsellors have been brought in to comfort schoolmates and on Sunday more than a hundred rugby team-mates paid tribute to their friend with a minute's silence before a Cup Final match he should have been playing in.

Peter Church, St Joseph's Rugby Club Chairman, told the Argus hundreds are expected to attend the funeral, including many of his rugby team-mates.

He said: "He had so many friends from rugby, but also from his hockey teams and karate class."

Last week St Joseph's head teacher Sue Jenkins paid tribute to a "popular boy". She said: "He was a talented sportsman who was captain of the year eight rugby team. He was very popular with pupils and with staff. He was such a popular boy, such a lovely character."

A family friend added: "Wherever Lewis went he fitted in. He touched everyone, he was a truly exceptional child."

A testimonial rugby match is also planned for May 8 at a venue to be arranged.

Mr Church said: "The testimonial was the idea of the Gwent District Rugby Union, they have been very supportive."

Lewis' funeral will be held on May 3, at 2.30pm, at St John's Church in Maindee
