Mohammed Asghar Plaid Cymru
I have lived in Wales for 34 years. I am an accountant, having gained my first degree in political science. I worked in an accountancy firm in Newport from 1971.
In 1984 I established my own practice in Newport.
I have been married to my wife Firdaus for 23 years and we have a daughter studying in London. I am fully aware of the problems that Newport EURO TMs citizens face day to day. If elected I shall work with organisations in Newport to eradicate crime, create more jobs, boost the Welsh economy, improve education and above all create a better healthcare system within Wales.
Over the last few years I have become an active member of Plaid Cymru. Last year I was successfully elected as the first Plaid councillor of Newport (Victoria).
Crime and Police: Crime is a very serious problem. The police officers and the public should tackle the problem for all communities in Newport. I hope to build a strong relationship between people and police. Anti-social behaviour is also surging. I would also like to form more after-school activity groups for children and more sports groups for young adults.
Jobs/Economy: Wales has recently seen a great change in the economy EURO " however unemployment is a massive problem. If elected, I will promote inward investment which would lead to more factories, shops, businesses etc. These companies will be able to provide training. Many youngsters in Wales are moving to bigger cities because they feel Newport is lagging behind and they are not able to use their skills and talents.
Education: I am currently governor for Maindee and Hartridge schools in Newport East. So I am aware of many of the issues arising in schools. If elected I hope to gain more funding for school meals. Hopefully this shall ensure that each child receives a balanced, nutritious meal at school.
I would like to improve staff conditions, with teachers given more assistance in lessons so that each child is given ample attention and support. I would like to see the employment of welfare officers or guidance councillors for children.
Health: Healthcare in Newport is not of a very high standard. If elected I will do all I can to cut waiting lists and create more old people EURO TMs homes in Newport. I feel the elderly should not be ignored, their health and well being is very important. There should be free health care for the elderly and meals on wheels, because these are the pillars of this country.
