Newport Wasps Danish rider Mads Korneliussen will be taking life easy for a few days after a spectacular last-heat crash in the convincing Premier Trophy win over Somerset on Sunday.

Korneliussen was injured when he fell at high speed, taking evasive action when Craig Watson fell after his machine lifted coming out of the second bend.

Korneliussen, fortunate not to have sustained serious injury, suffered facial and arm injuries and yesterday went to hospital. He will be out of action for at least a week.

He left hospital with his arm in a sling and medication to help relieve the pain but he will be in the pits tonight, encouraging his fellow riders, for their Premier Trophy meeting on the Isle of Wight.

Last night's meeting at Exeter called off because of rain - but promoter Tim Stone was not too disappointed on this occasion.

He said: "Mads would not have ridden at Exeter so although we are disappointed that it was called off, it does mean that when we go down there Mads will be available."

Wasps are without a meeting this weekend - Hayley Stadium staging the first of eight rounds in the British Sidecar Championships - but he has been doubling up with Swindon, replacing the injured Oliver Allen at reserve.

Wasps have already agreed a new date for the Exeter meeting, the Premier Trophy event now going ahead on May 16 and four days later Wasps will make the trip to Somerset.

Newport Mavericks are at Stoke tomorrow night in the Conference League and will use rider replacement for the absent Scott Pegler.

Mavericks: Karlis Ezergailis, Scott Pegler (rider replacement), Jamie Westacott, Danny Warwick, Karl Mason, Billy Legg, Sam Hurst. No 8: Lewis Dallaway.

Last night's results Elite League: Belle Vue 49 (Kenneth Bjerre, Jason Crump 10) Eastbourne 41 (David Norris, Davey Watt 10), Coventry 53 (Scott Nicholls 12+1) Arena Essex 40 (Ryan Sullivan 13), Wolverhampton 57 (Mikael Max 12) Swindon 33 (Leigh Adams 13) - Wolverhampton win bonus point.
