FIREFIGHTERS from Malpas station's Red Watch ended up with red faces as a result of a marathon charity effort.
But it was not embarrassment that coloured their cheeks - just the strain of pounding out 26 miles on a treadmill in full kit, with breathing apparatus.
Dave Vaughan, Mike Paul and Paul Simmons clocked up the miles at the Asda store in Duffryn, Newport, to raise funds for the Fire Service Benevolent Fund and the Tickled Pink campaign for breast cancer care.
Staff from the store joined the trio to try to match them mile for mile.
Other firefighters from the station's off-duty watches supported the effort by bag-packing in the store, while shoppers were encouraged to make a donation.
The treadmill endurance test was practice for the real thing, for the trio are to head across the Atlantic in the autumn to take part in the New York Marathon, again for charity.
Mr Vaughan said it was a chance to find out how many plasters they might need to take with them to New York, adding: "The support we have been shown by local businesses and fellow firefighters and family is fantastic, and we can't thank everybody enough."
The firefighters are also planning a charity night with Asda Newport, at Rogerstone and Bassaleg Social Club.
Tickets are available from the Asda Newport customer service desk, and more information on the event is available from Su Messenger on 01633 815571.
