AN inquest into the death of a Cwmbran teenager who was found dead at her home was opened yesterday.
Alexandra Mitchell, aged 14, of Pentre Close, Cwm-bran, was found dead by her mother on March 25 of suspected carbon monoxide poisoning. Gwent deputy coroner Wendy James formally opened the inquest in Newport.
It was adjourned for police investigations to continue, and Alexandra's body was formally released for her funeral to take place.
The Fairwater High School pupil was discovered in her bed by her mother, Anne Mitchell, on Good Friday, after she returned from work.
The family's dog was also found dead downstairs.
Alex's family later paid a loving tribute to a "wonderful, most beautiful and talented grandaughter, daughter, sister and auntie."
Shocked neighbours told the Argus they believed she died of carbon monoxide poisoning, but a joint investigation by Gwent police and the Health and Safety Executive is still ongoing.
A spokeswoman for Gwent police said yesterday investigating officers were currently awaiting results of forensic tests following a post mortem examination.
Staff and pupils at Fairwater High were shocked at the tragic news of Alex's death. They are planning a special tribute to remember her. Head teacher Steve Cocks said: "Alex was an extremely pleasant young girl.
"She was a very nice member of her form group who everybody was fond of."
