CHILDREN who were playing rugby in the dark have seen the light, thanks to a generous donation from a Gwent company.
The pupils, from Mount Pleasant School, Rogerstone, were trying to play rugby and football in the evenings, but had no lighting on their pitches.
After matches they used torches to find their way to meet waiting parents.
Now Corus Strip Products, Newport, have now donated £500 to pay for lights on the pitch.
Head teacher Clive Waters said: "One of our parents, who works at Corus, saw them stumbling around in the dark and asked why we didn't put in lighting there. Sadly we just couldn't afford it.
"A few weeks later I was shocked to receive a call from Corus saying they were going to give us money for the lights.
"This sort of thing just doesn't happen in schools and I couldn't believe it.
"We are incredibly grateful and many children will benefit from this donation.
"Hopefully they will be in place for the shorter evenings, and the children will no longer have to bring their torches to school."
Robert Fradd, regeneration manager at Corus, said: "We were approached by a member of staff who thought we might be able to offer the school some lighting equipment.
"We had nothing available, but this was such a good cause we managed to find the money.
"We try to help local causes whenever we can, and it was wonderful to see the smiles on their faces when we handed over the cheque."
