INVESTIGATIONS are continuing into the death of a young girl found dead in bed by her mother.

Cwmbran teenager Alex Mitchell, 14, was found at her home in Pentre Close, Coed Eva, Cwmbran, on Good Friday after suspected carbon monoxide poisoning.

Gwent police and the Health and Safety Executive are continuing a joint investigation.

A police spokeswoman said they are currently waiting for the results of a post-mortem examination and the coroner had been informed.

Alex's family paid a loving tribute to a "wonderful, most beautiful and talented grandaughter, daughter, sister and auntie."

A statement released by the family, which appeared in later editions of the Argus yesterday, said: "You've given us 14 happy years of love, laughter and inspiration. Always an honour to have loved and shared with you, you'll be held in our hearts forever."

Alex was found by her mother Anne Mitchell when she came home from work. The family dog was found dead downstairs.

Flowers and soft toys have been left in the front garden of the house. Staff and pupils of Alex's school, Fairwater High, have been shocked by the incident.

Head teacher Steve Cocks said: "Everybody has been totally shocked by this. She was a good pupil, well thought of by other pupils in the school. "Alex was an extremely pleasant young girl. She was a very nice member of her form group. Everybody was fond of her.

"When we return to school I will meet her head of year and form tutor and discuss what we can do.

"But whatever happens, we will definitely do something to remember Alex."
